Last Day Of Speech Therapy

Being a 2nd grader at Thomas Jefferson school, his class will be ended at 2:00 PM, which will conflict with his speech therapy at Providence Speech and Hearing center at 1:00 PM every Mondays with Ms. Gina so we decided to cancel the therapy.

We’ve been using tele-health for the speech sessions but because today is the last day, we wanted to see Ms. Gina for the last time in person and gave her some appreciation gift.  William was so excited to go.  Actually he had been asking to go to the office because he said it was boring to have the on-line meeting.

Meeting With The School Principal

Now that William is in Kindergarten, his school ends at 2:00 PM instead of 1:00 PM like last year. This conflicts with the Speech therapy at Providence of Speech & Hearing center, which is 1:30 PM every Monday. I planned to pull him out early around 1:00 PM on Mondays to take him to the speech therapy because the speech center doesn’t have any availability to move his session to later time.

So I stopped by the office to talk to Ms. Velado, the Lincoln school principal. At first she said the district will not allow it because it’s the parents responsibility to send their children to school; and we could go to jail if there’s so many absences. I explained to her our situation; she then asked how old is William. ‘He’s 5 now, will be turning 6 on November!’. She then said it’s ok until William turns 6 because the district only enforces the rule for 6 years old and up. So we have about 3 months to pull him out early on Mondays. After that we need to have a solution to our problem. The issue is easy to solve if the Providence center has new available spots; but then after a long day at school, I don’t know if it’s a good idea to send him to speech therapy. 6 hours at school is a long time for a 5 or 6 years old boy.

Lately his speech therapy complains that he doesn’t comply well. So maybe we take a break from speech therapy at Providence center. We still have speech therapy at school; 15 minutes a week.

I’m not sure what to do. It’s a hard decision to make because it’s really hard to get a spot at Providence center; If we give it up, there’s no guarantee that we’ll get a new spot that fits our schedule.

Speech Therapy 8th Session

Mon 4/16/2018

William speech therapy session is now moved from Tuesday to Monday at 1:30 PM, which is much better that William doesn’t need to leave his class early.  It’s Monday, Tim’s not working so he picked William up at Mitchell school and then took him to Providence Speech and Hearing Center ( Brookhurst and Bushard).  William has new speech therapist; Ms. Kristi is no longer teaching William.

Today session mainly involves the functions of body parts: Nose is to smell, Eyes to see.  At first William did not understand the questions but after the session, William knows how to respond to questions like “What’s Nose is for?”

Speech Therapy 6th Session

Today both Ms. Kristy and Stephanie came out the door to greet William but only Ms. Stephanie conducted the session while Ms. Kristy working on her computer.   William learned to use the word “See”.  Stephanie showed him the card with picture on it and asked William to say what he saw on the cards.

I see dolphins, I see hamburger, I see pineapple, I see banana, I see skateboard, I see raccoon, I see computer.

“We’re gonna play a game!” – Stephanie told William.  She took out the cards, showed 3 cards to William and asked a question.  William was supposed to point to the correct card.

Where do you sleep? She showed 3 cards with different picture on each card: bed, the banana and ocean.  William pointed to the BED picture.  He got it right so Jennifer handed him the light-up ball to play for few seconds.

The game continued:  where do we seat? Chair.  What can you catch? Ball.  What do you eat with? Spoon.

Session always flew by so fast!

Speech Therapy 4th Session

William plays with Play Doh, making star and snow man.

Tuesday 12:00 PM. Today we met Staphanie again; Kristie was not there.  William first got to play with Play Doh and make snow man.  He requested to make snow man about 3 times.  Then Stephanie got out the little house, bed, doll, pillow, blanket, bathtub, table, chair, etc. and asked: where does the bed go? can you put the baby to sleep, what do we do with the bathtub? William especially liked the pillow and blankets, he put the blanket over the doll.

All the time I thought the play house is for girls, never thought a boy can also learn from it.

Putting the correct figures on the board that has pictures.

Speech Therapy – 3rd Session

William and Stephanie

12:00 PM at Providence Hearing and Speech center.  Today Stephanie used a book and asked William to identify the object (while Ms. Kristie worked at her desk); he could answer most of them.  Some questions like “Whose food is this?” William did not understand.  30 minutes passed by really fast.

Speech Therapy – 2nd Session

William and Ms. Kristy

Tuesday 12:00 PM.  Took William to his second session of Speech Therapy at Providence Hearing and Speech Center in Fountain Valley.  The session was only 30 minutes, the first 20 minutes was in the room, the next 5 minutes was in the gym and the last 5 minutes was for the therapist to take notes (which means we left after the gym, which was about 12:25 PM).

When we got in the room, Ms. Kristy let him sat in the small chair and buckled him up (so that he doesn’t run around).  She taught him the concept of TOP and UNDER.  Also, he had to ask for things “I NEED ….”.   She also introduced the functionality of things “What does it do?”, “An airplane fly”…

William tried to unbuckle the straps a few times but could not.

The gym

When in the gym, William had to ask for things he wanted to play “I want swing”, etc.
